-
Beyond Squidgygate
-

-
When tapes of an intimate phone conversation between PRINCESS
- DIANA and a man who called her "Squidgy" were made public two
- years ago, Diana's image as the innocent wronged woman in a
- bad marriage was tarnished. Now it has been splattered. Princess
- in Love, just published in England, recounts in 192 pages the
- salacious details of Di's alleged five-year affair with her
- riding instructor, army officer JAMES HEWITT (seen below receiving
- a trophy from the princess after a polo match in 1988). According
- to the book, the two were instantly captivated with each other
- when they met at a party in 1986 and subsequently engaged in
- sleep-overs at the Princess's Kensington Palace residence when
- Prince Charles was traveling. "They pushed the future from their
- minds and dwelled only in the present, in the perfect, dreamlike
- seam where their happiness met," writes author Anna Pasternak.
- The book is based entirely on Hewitt's account of the relationship.
- While the publisher claims the handsome cavalry officer received
- no payment for his story, the British tabloids reported last
- week that he indeed made millions of dollars as a result of
- his conversations with Pasternak. (In fact, Hewitt has just
- purchased a $387,000 Georgian house on 70 acres of land.) "Tawdry,"
- "worthless" and "grubby" were the words Buckingham Palace used
- to describe Princess in Love. Meanwhile, pundits called for
- a reassessment of the rules of succession. The Daily Mirror
- branded Hewitt a "revolting creep" who deserved a "horsewhipping."
- But theoretically he could suffer a fate far more severe. According
- to 14th century English law, adultery with the wife of a future
- sovereign is punishable by hanging.

-
Bridges of Brief Encounters
-

-
As America embraces MERYL STREEP, action heroine, CLINT EASTWOOD
- is embracing Meryl Streep, lonely farmwife. Streep, winning
- raves in the hit The River Wild, is landlocked in Iowa, where
- she has started filming The Bridges of Madison County. Eastwood
- is directing and starring in the tearjerker, which is five days
- ahead of schedule thanks to Streep's skill. "I appreciate her
- professionalism," says Eastwood, who's wrapping scenes with
- his co-star in unheard-of single takes.

-
SEEN & HEARD
-

-
Beware the everyguy turned everyguy heartthrob. According to
- ex-masseuse PARIS PAPIRO, DAVID CARUSO ended his four-year relationship
- with her just months after his role on NYPD Blue turned him
- into a sex symbol. Claiming that he reneged on a promise to
- support her, Papiro has filed a $4 million suit. Caruso, who
- is leaving NYPD to pursue a movie career, counters that the
- breakup was mutual and that Papiro backed out of a $6,000-a-month
- settlement once he landed a $2 million film role.

-
Ex-Cheers barkeep TED DANSON has acquired the movie rights to
- the story of ALDRICH AMES, the imprisoned CIA/KGB double agent. The
- head of Danson's Anasazi Productions worked with Ames at a Chicago
- theater in 1961 and contacted him to discuss a film version
- of his life. Danson does not plan to play the part himself;
- he's hoping JACK NICHOLSON will.
